01

What exactly is traditional prototyping?

Traditional prototyping involves designing, developing, building and fabricating a model of your product idea. Our designers and developers use everything from pencil and paper or a CAD design software in order to turn your idea into something physical. This can either be a “works like” model, a “Looks like” model, or both a works like/looks like model.

What is the difference between Injection molding and RTV molding?

Injection molding is production molding that requires making a tool or mold out of metal and injecting hot plastic into the metal mold cavity in order to get a production piece. The advantages of injection molding is that the price per piece will be significantly lower. The disadvantages of injection molding are:

Step 1: Providing us with Information.

Please provide us with everything you have regarding the Project (we will be happy to sign/issue an NDA).

Drawings/ concept briefs/ dimensions are necessary. Having CAD files (.stl, .step, .xt) will help us get you an accurate and quick quote. Please also let us know what materials you envision the project being made out of and any other specifications.

We will have a general conversation about what you want to achieve with the project to determine the Scope. Do you need design work? Engineering? Sculpting?...Do you need a looks like model, a works like model, both? If you want silicone molds and cast parts, what are the quantities? What is the timeline we need to achieve?

02

Step 2: Concept art

If the project quote and lead time is approved, we will take it to the next step. Design Formations can provide you with concept art if needed (about 1 week).

03

Step 3: 3D CAD files and/or engineering

After the concept art is approved, we will work on 3D CAD files and/or engineering.

04

Step 4: We create Samples

Once the 3D files get approved, we will work on breadboarding and making a works like sample for you to approve. This will represent how your project will work like in production.

05

Step 5: Final Model Sample

After the works like sample is approved, we will provide you with a 3d printed looks like model finished and painted to your specifications. This will represent how your project will look in production!

06

Step 3: Final Delivery

After the looks like sample is approved, we will proceed in making a silicone mold where we will cast (or manufacture) a looks like/works like sample. We refer to this as a Release to Production or RTP.
